IASTM – Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization

IASTM stands for “Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization.” It is a therapeutic technique used in physical therapy and rehabilitation to address soft tissue dysfunction, such as scar tissue, adhesions, and fascial restrictions. IASTM involves the use of specially designed instruments made of various materials, such as stainless steel or plastic, to perform targeted mobilization and manipulation of the soft tissues.
During an IASTM session, the therapist applies gentle pressure and glides the instrument over the skin in a specific pattern and direction. The goal is to detect and treat areas of tissue restriction or fibrosis, which may be causing pain, reduced range of motion, or functional limitations.
The potential benefits of IASTM include:
1. Breaking down Scar Tissue: IASTM can help break down and remodel scar tissue that forms as part of the healing process after injuries or surgeries.
2. Reducing Fascial Restrictions: Fascia is a connective tissue that surrounds and supports muscles and organs. IASTM can target fascial restrictions and help improve tissue mobility.
3. Improving Blood Flow: The mechanical stimulation provided by IASTM may increase blood flow to the treated area, promoting tissue healing and repair.
4. Enhancing Range of Motion: By addressing soft tissue restrictions, IASTM may improve joint flexibility and range of motion.
The therapist will assess the patient’s condition and determine whether IASTM is appropriate for their specific needs. While IASTM can be beneficial for many individuals, it may not be suitable for everyone. There are certain contraindications and precautions to consider, such as open wounds, acute inflammation, or certain medical conditions.
